HAPPY 4TH of JULY From HRM Queen Elizabeth II [04 Jul 2008|07:26am]

lady_giz
[ mood | cheerful ]
[ music | Absolute O'Brien ]

** Important, please read thoroughly! **

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

(You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

1. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour', 'favour', 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise'. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

------------------------

3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as 'like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as US English. We will let M*crosoft know on your behalf. The M*crosoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize.

-------------------

4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

-----------------

5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

----------------------

6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

----------------------

7. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables.

Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

--------------------

8. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

-------------------

9. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

-------------------

10. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting Nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

---------------------

11. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Gywneth Paltrow attempt English dialogue in Shakespeare in Love was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

---------------------

12. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body Armour like a bunch of nancies). Don't try Rugby - the South Africans and Kiwis will thrash you, like they regularly thrash us.

---------------------

13. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

--------------------

14. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

-----------------

15. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

---------------

16. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

********
Thanks to Jay P.! We now return you to our regularly scheduled delusion...

thanks for the responses to my last question, guys, I did what you said and sorting out the brain map thing really did help. And now I have another question for you delightful learned people: what's wrong with amanora's creatures, and other sites like mummy's creatures when you try to download norns? because every time I try to download a norn or several norns from one of those sites, they always turn out to be like grendels or ettins and basicly not what I initially wanted. Is it something to do with which slot they're in, like grendel slot, ettin slot, etc (i dont know the first thing about all this slot business), and does anyone else have the same problem?

And omg plz tell me SOMEONE has done a fanvid of this movie. That would be, like...the greatest thing ever.

I thought I'd lost my DVD, and I was SUPER PISSED. But then I found it on the laundry room floor in front of the washer with hair and dirt and dust all over it. I'mmabout to try it out, see if it works. Wish my luck! Eee! *crosses fingers*

I've read that the gargoyles are supposed to represent different parts of Quasimodo that he can't express in the tower. That's fair enough. Victor is serious, Laverne is the loving / caring aspect. Hugo is the party animal / defiant one and that's logical too.  What creeps me out is the Djali fetish. 0_o  Nope. Can't express that in a Disney movie. Is Quasimodo part Gringoire here? All these years I thought Disney placed aspects of Gringoire into Phoebus to make him "likeable".

Wrong, oh so wrong...

Gettysburg, Chrono'Nauts and New Arrivals [02 Jul 2008|09:23am]

lady_giz
[ mood | amused ]
[ music | silence,,,,ahhhhh ]

Already July-- GOOD! The faster this summer comes and goes-- ah but we know that. The local ridiculorum started with their explosives last week, but seem oddly quiet this year. Instead of several hours of sporadic outbursts, they let go a few charges for a few moments every night-- has to be after dark or we'll all know who they are....even though we all know who they are... My guess is gas prices have kept folks from driving to PA or 'south of the border' to purchase this year's stock of whizz-bangs. The 4th is Friday, hooray! I hope to spend it somewhere in air conditioned splendor.

And with the 4th comes-- YES!! The annual re-enactment at Gettysburg. If the car was up to it, I would DEFINITELY be there. Stoodles is going, and sent me a local Gettysburg news blurb about all the new and wonderful stuff planned this year-- including a living history village of 1,000 participants, and an expected pre-registered force of 13,000 re-enactors and 500 horses. Ah, memories! It's to modern Victorians what Pennsic War is to SCAdians. Some great times-- nights in camp are my favorite. The black landscape pocked with a sea of fires, in the Union and Confederate camps, with a fabulous mix of music drifting softly in the air. From celtic to bluegrass to waltzes and military bands playing polkas for entertainment on officers' row. The neighing of horses in their temporary paddocks, the smell of wood fires, sweet grass, and every so often a roar of laughter from one camp or regiment, bawdy songs with concertinas, ballads and patriot tunes catch your attention every now and then and.....oooh, I wish I could go. It is the 145th anniversary this year-- and even with gas prices being what they are, quite a crowd of spectators are expected to attend.

This last weekend was the very splendid Totally Normal Event up in Whippany-- I know I mentioned it in an earlier post, but thought I would include a pic for posterity.

The hag-like carrion individual sitting in the middle, adjusting specs, would be me. The rest of the crew are but a small portion of those who participated in the costume competition.

New Arrivals Department: Jackie, from St. Louis, is making her move! She's a woman I met through a Type O Negative forum when Peter Steele meant alot more to me than he does now (for a whooping 6 or 7 months)She has sold her hpouse and is moving to Joisey this very weekend. Now, while I have never met her and enjoy her emails and chats on the phone, I am afraid I will not be able to be there for her as she settles into a new environment. And the reason for moving to NJ in the first place? Well, Mr. Steele lives in Brooklyn, and, well... let's just say she's a major fan. But some may say it seems awfully akin to stalking..... I can hardly find time enough to take care of the friends and responsibilities currently in my life-- and of this I am most ashamed. I hope things go well and she is not overwhelmed by the move. She's starting out new and knows it, and that is a big step for anyone--- and one I am ill equiped or inclined to take with her. Pray for smoothness....

Speaking of responsibilities-- my eBay life has made me a much happier person, as far as the bank is concerned. My paintings are selling to new patrons, and I am meeting some wonderful folks through the sales of vintage clothing and Victoriana. However, I am left with having to post many things-- as it seems to be the case every time I post and entry or email. So away I go, to see what new delights await at the PO. Cheers!

All the things you never knew you always wanted.... [30 Jun 2008|09:59am]

lady_giz
[ mood | chipper ]
[ music | Nox Arcana ]

Let's make this brief, shall we? 30th June, must work lots today-- which is all home based so it's either very good or not so good. My traditional 19th century lack of AC makes July and August decidedly uncomfy, epecially when I paint under 2 lamps in the crowded closet known as my 'studio/work room' (in reality the old TV room) And I have several dozen items to wrap and post from eBay sales. AND have just decided to take a few of my old canvas fencing jackets and convert them to 'strait waistcoats' (straitjackets)for future Vic doings. Though you may be tempted to ask, in what sort of Victorian recreations do I indulge, that a strait waistcoat is necessary? BE PREPARED I says.

Had a rollicking good time at the Totally Normal Event of this years Wicked Faire-- met many fabulous folks, and some delectably 'Steamy' ones-- Stopped in at the Cross Estate on our drive up-- where I used to live years ago as a Nat'l Park Service Employee. Wanted to show Dave, and attached is a pic or two of us there.

David, standing on the steps to the side 'veranda'. Doors behind him open into the entry hall (front of building and main door off to camera right) I was a bit disapponted to see they had replaced the marble black and white checkerboard floor of this hall with a new pink mable design. (new in the last 10 years that is)

Dave on the steps down to the garden. Portion of the upper yard behind him. The property also has a 5 story stone water tower-- the Frankenstien tower-- which I failed to get a good shot of this trip. Hell, when I lived there we took lots of photos in the pre-digital days. The garden, which had gone untended and unloved for 50 years was a delicious gothicky ruin of weeds and broken terracotta, which has also been all repaired and now flourishes beautifully. We used to go out in the garden, and the wisteria arbor at night-- it was wonderful in its desolation back then-- but now it is quite suitable for weddings and garden parties, thanks to the NJ Herb and Garden societies. I will have to get Dave's pix posted as well as mine scanned and posted from the old days-- many nice pix of the place, and marble fireplace in the library-- they actually have books and a baby grand in there now! Even the basement was a trip! Old Mrs. Cross had dark dank room after room down there, stocked with provisions in case of disaster. The estate sits up on a hill (what passes for mountains in NJ!) and the grounds are open to the public for those who are interested in visiting. VERY secluded....

I suppose I should get moving here--- lots to do! I shall leave you with one last pic-- Dave standing on the walkway between veranda and garden steps. I admit, I am so used to the place that I didn't take half the photos that he did, as he was seeing it for the first time. Hopefully soon I will have a few more.

My full review of Tim Burton's movie 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' is finally here, across the board. A Very Productive Day Off Work [27 Jun 2008|09:41am]

[violet_light_]
[ mood | creative ]

Well, this is a fairly big post! I have two pictures that I took while I was in Paris, as well as some icons (all of Clopin and Frollo), and that Clopin/Frollo fanart I promised. :D

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I took this photo from our bus. I turned for a whole two seconds to talk to my friend, and when I looked back it was just there. Oh wow, it just looked so surreal. Like when I visited the Tour Eiffel, it felt like I was looking at it through a television screen! I really, really want to go back. :(

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
This was taken while I was standing across the street from it. It was so big that I couldn't fit the whole thing into the shot! :P I don't think pictures really show just how big it is? Because while I was walking up the steps to go inside I looked up and it was nauseating! I didn't take any pictures inside. I was sort of stuck like @_@ for as long as I was in there. :)

Now I have 9 icons (7 of Clopin, 2 of Frollo)! These were really interesting to make, because I've never made icons of animated characters before. I admit, in the beginning I had NO idea what I was doing, but I hope that you all like them! I personally think that they turned out nicely. I don't know if I will find time this weekend, with work and Canada Day and all that, but next week I should have another, bigger batch. :)

And now, for the moment that you all [info]the_crass_nova and [info]typhlogirl have all been waiting for! A Clopin/Frollo drawing I did this morning! Just to let you know, if I had to give it a rating I'd say PG-13, since it contains adult situations. It's not porn or anything, but I don't want anyone stumbling upon something they're rather not stumble upon, you know? Anyways! I suppose maybe I'm happy with it. I haven't drawn cartoons in SO long! o.o

So, I was going to try my hand at some Clopin/Frollo fan art, but I was sidetracked by actually watching the movie instead. I was going to read more of Notre Dame de Paris, but it's currently 1:00am, and seeing as that book is written in French from the 1800's, it more or less requires my full concentration! I am fluent in French, but my modern Canadian French is nothing compared to that. But anyways! I was just listening to The Bells of Notre Dame, and was wondering if anyone else gets butterflies, or a warm feeling when Clopin sings that last high note? It may just be me. I actually don't know what I like so much about it, but every time I hear it, it just brings a smile to my face. :)

Anyways, that's all I had to say. None of my friends are as interested in HOND as I am, so I suppose I'm just looking for someone to chat with!

It's that time of year again - Anthrocon is upon us, and I'm hitching a ride to sunny Pittsburgh to join in with all the fun. I'll be away from Thursday morning to Monday night.

If you're going, you can catch me working in Ops - Fri 4-7, Sat 6-9, Sun 12-3 - or just look for the long-haired norn in green.

(I actually have a spare slot in my room for Thursday-Sunday afternoon, in case anyone's still sitting on the side about going . . . just $32/night. Let me know!)
